They have to be sure they want it and it has to be a choice that’s well considered and well thought out. The reason for that is that just like drawing a lightsaber, using force or violence in any way for a Jedi in this era is a huge deal. So in order for the weapons to activate you have to place your lightsaber on this sort of control console and it reads the kyber crystal and off they go. Soule: The key to the way the ships work is not so much that the ship can’t be turned on but that the weapons can’t work without a lightsaber. What would happen if a Jedi were to lose or break their lightsaber? That wasn’t even conceivable to these young folks until suddenly it had to be and they’re in combat.ĭuBois: Charles, you mention in your book that the Jedi’s ship is controlled by their lightsaber, which is a really unique idea. It’s a very intense moment of realizing the galaxy is suddenly not in an intergalactic war but there are threats that are very real. It’s like when you might sign up for the National Guard at peace time, but then you’re deployed. Older: For the young people there’s a lot of these moments when they realize how serious things have gotten very suddenly. The events that start to unfold first in Light of the Jedi, then in the rest of the initiative really shake that. This is a time when the Jedi Order and Republic are equals in every sense of the word. Because they have lived for centuries without a major conflict, so their entire view of life, the Force, and themselves, and the Order, and their relationship with the Republic is very different than what we’ve seen before. No one in their right mind would take them on, and then they face people who will and that’s the difference in them. Usually if they do reach for the lightsaber that’s the end of the problem. These are Jedi who don't expect to have to light their lightsaber. And the lightsaber thing is really important. They are beacons themselves in every part of their life. It’s an amazing time and place to be alive, which of course makes some people mad.ĭuBois: The Jedi of this time don’t use their lightsabers unless absolutely necessary, which might take some Star Wars fans off guard. There’s all of these exciting initiatives happening. They are taking care of a number of planets and going in new directions. It’s expanding in a way that’s good for everyone. The Republic itself is a very functioning democracy. It’s amazing to see them having a good time being out with the people and being beloved. They are actual peacekeepers who keep the peace. When we meet our heroes the Jedi are at their height. Older: Things are awesome, that’s why it’s called The High Republic isn’t it? Everything is great, but of course there are creeping problems that we see more and more of as the initiative goes on. My story also has a Wookie Jedi in it.ĭuBois: Can one of you speak to the state of the galaxy in this era? We also meet the main villains of the piece, the Nihil, which are a group of anarchistic space pirate people. In it we follow a large ensemble cast of Jedi, Republic high-level and low-level people, all kinds of people. It is designed to introduce many of the huge new concepts, characters, ideas, good guys, bad guys, and ships to Star Wars fandom. She has to learn what her particular path is going to be as they face the Drengier.Ĭharles Soule: The project that I wrote for The High Republic is Light of the Jedi. She has to learn what kind of Jedi she is going to be alongside a group of Jedi Masters who are far senior to her in every way. It follows the life of a Jedi known as Keeve who is a padawan when we meet her, and very soon becomes a Jedi Knight. It’s part Republic embassy, part Jedi Temple, part everything on the frontier. The comic is a group book about a group of Jedi onboard Starlight Beacon, which is this massive space station. Cavan Scott: I’m working on the Marvel comic series The High Republic.
